This Just In: Canadian Venture Capital Investment Down!

Posted by Shane McLean on August 19, 2009

In the category of “now tell me something I don’t know”, last week the Canadian Venture Capital Association released their stats on the level of venture capital investment in Canada in the second quarter of 2009 reporting that: venture capital investment in Canada is down.  I may have oversold it in the headline to this post because that’s certainly not  surprising.

2008 wasn’t a great year for VC investment in Canada  so it’s pretty dismal to hear from the CVCA that in 2009 we have seen a  42% drop over the second quarter of 2008.  Maybe it shouldn’t be surprising or even necessarily alarming given that we are (hopefully) just starting to recover from the worst recession in 70 years.  Time will tell whether a stabilization in the economy together with more government VC funding in Canada might stimulate an increase in overall VC activity here.  Let’s hope.
