Bright Side of Life #4:  Theory: Entrepreneurs + lower cost of entry = more cool stuff – My sense, and I think I am seeing evidence of this concept playing out, is that less capital intensive, more collaboration and open models of production seem to be giving rise to more entrepreneurs that are chasing their goals without the initial need to have a “real” company at all.  Often this seems to be happening as a part time endeavour to see if things fly.  The upside of this is that more entrepreneurs are able to test the waters on a part time basis before taking the plunge, removing barriers to entry and meaning more ideas can see the light of day.  That’s the theory, but as I said I seem to be seeing more of this lately so let’s hope it is a trend that continues.   One caveat is that if your intention is to eventually “monetize” what you are doing you will need to pay some attention to the legitimate concerns of future investors/buyers will have even at an early stage.  I’m thinking principally about taking early steps to firm up rights to intellectual property.

Bright Side of Life #5: Ottawa is developing a very interesting tech scene – I have been impressed recently at the “scene” developing around tech in Ottawa.   In my experience the Ottawa tech community always seemed to involve folks leaving their walled compounds to meet in a mutually agreeable location briefly before quickly retreating back to the safety of the walled compound to continue their work in secret.  Now I’m seeing co-working spaces, collaboration, blogs, more casual events, etc.  It’s more fun, but it’s also a necessary resource as smaller more agile entities pop up to fill the ecosystem once populated by telecom and semiconductor.

Closing out this series of posts, I’ll give credit to the classic Monty Python for reminding us to “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life“.  ”When you’re chewing on life’s gristle, Don’t grumble, give a whistle! And this’ll help things turn out for the best…”
